Top 3 Artists for Escapism

This is a post moved from my old blog: https://uzulblog.wixsite.com/uzul

This article’s pretty ironic in itself - I’m currently sitting here, phone way out of my sight, trying to write something for the blog to get away from everything else that seems to be going on.

Whether it’s mock GCSEs, friend or family problems, mental health issues… there’s definitely something that’s gnawing on all of our minds. And whether you know it or not, we all have a way of releasing ourselves from these stresses, and for a lot of us that’s music.

So that’s how you’ve got yourself here, reading this article and probably feeling a bit weighed down by the world. All you’ve got to remember is it’s probably not as bad as you’re thinking in your head, and as long as you have distractions you’ll feel much better.

If you’re actually interested in what this post has to say then you probably already know about the value of music and the impact it can have on our emotions. It feels magic. The songs and genres to take people away from the real world are completely unique to every person, but I think I may have a few different singers and groups up my sleeve that will appeal to a whole lot of people.

Let’s get down to business with the first artist: Mac Demarco. He’s a pretty popular kid on the indie-rock scene, but he’s definitely not overrated. The majority of his songs are slow and dreamy without being too sad, the perfect combination for if you want to unwind and not think about anything heavy, and always showcase his unique guitar skills (if you’re interested in that sort of thing). One of his especially surreal songs, ‘On the Level’ has slow, calm and relaxing lyrics whilst creating a comforting atmosphere to chill out to.

Another artist has quite a similar effect to Mac, but does it in a completely different way: Air; especially their album ‘Moon Safari’. When I talked about them to a family member, they described it as ‘coffee shop music, but really good coffee shop music’ and honestly, nothing could describe them better. The opening song to the album, ‘La Femme d’Argent’, is a calm but iconic instrumental in which Air’s world-famous piano riffs can be heard. It’s definitely very relaxing, but no so relaxing that it doesn’t stimulate any thought process in your brain. Basically, it's great to read to, draw to or just to do something creative to.

Finally, we’ll talk about Roy Blair, a relatively new artist that pleasantly surprised everyone with his genre-blurring debut album, ‘Cat Heaven’. Since he helped Brockhampton produce some of their songs, it shouldn’t have come as a shock that his own discography would be arguably even better. It’s a silky smooth mixture of indie rock, pop and hip hop or rap vocals at times, and to add to that, it’s so easy to listen to. When I first heard ‘Thunder’, I have to admit that I didn’t give it the chance. But once you listen past the introduction, it’s safe to say Roy will almost definitely be one of the most influential artists or the alternative genre because of his boundary breaking songs. His newer release ‘Dennis’ had the same effect. There’s honestly already so much to explore and talk about with his music that you’ll get swept away in no time.

A lot of the time it’s difficult to get downtime from everything happening around you. And as much as you may like to create or do a more time-consuming hobby to distract yourself, music is the perfect and portable way to calm you down in times of stress. Whatever it is that you like, just put in your earphones and everything will seem that little bit better.
