The UK has gone into the third lockdown, and funnily enough, staying at home is getting increasingly monotonous. The motivation to have quality time with yourself has long dwindled - watching a film or baking is now just a mere activity amongst the sea of other activities you’ve done to try and fill time. I’ve found that in these times it’s difficult to find and appreciate new music instead of listening to the same thing over and over again - there’s just no stimulation to do that. So, here are a few artists that provide some thought-provoking and stimulating music that will refresh your tastes!
The first artist is extremely revered and well-known but they are definitely worth the mention: Air. I feel like I’ll never stop writing about them and if you scroll down my blog, I’ve mentioned them SO much. It’s kind of like Musak - in case you miss that specific coffee shop ambience - but (of course) more immersive and impressive. Of course I have to mention Moon Safari, which is by far their most well-known and accepted album, with classic songs such as La Femme D’Argent and Sexy Boy. It’s nice to listen to more mellow music and muted vocals for when you’re relaxing at home or trying to get work done - personally I cannot concentrate at all if anyone is singing in the background, so this is perfect for those sorts of occasions. Don’t get me wrong though, they aren’t just a put-on-and-forget-about-it kind of artist. You’ll see once you listen. One of my favourites at the moment isn’t from that album, but is just as amazing: Playground Love. It’s such a famous trip-hop track that is just completely timeless.
Next up is Tirzah, who’s a relatively new artist in my musical tastes but from the few songs I’ve heard, she is intriguing and, quite frankly, addictive. One particular standout was the Make It Up single release. The main song (called Make It Up, quelle surprise!) is led by a dark beat that almost sounds as if it’s pushing down from above you - it sounds insane but once you listen you’ll know what I mean. This is partnered with her nonchalant vocals to make the perfect ultra-cool song. Also on the EP is What’s the Use, which is more electronic and past-paced, again using interesting and stimulating sound. She is completely unique in her music.
Last of all, Yves Tumor is the artist I’ve been the most excited to discuss. I’ve known about him for a while from his single Noid, and I’ve always intended on listening to more of him. ‘Gospel of a New Century’ has been out for a while now and I’ve heard it around quite a lot, but one day I had the urge to listen to it and though ‘Why have I not appreciated this enough?’. What stands out about the song is the bass which carries the emotion and adds to the integrity of Tumor’s lyrics, which are the perfect mix of pure feeling and pop-punk angst. The song Kerosene! further demonstrates Yves Tumor’s amazing ability to captivate people through instrumentals, with the heavy, pulsating guitar solo that cuts through the song. It feels euphoric and I cannot stop listening to it. Yves Tumor is definitely the artist to listen to whilst you’re at home and reignite your music journey.
I’m going to make a playlist where I’ll include these artists in more detail to get you introduced to them and I’ll also throw in a few other songs. Happy listening! xx
